Political and economic relations are, to be sure, the most desperate things that a person has to live with. But no less important, or even more so, are the everyday objects like cigarette cases or lanterns that are a pressing reality in a person's life. (From The Shadow of the Gone Past by Kyoji Watanabe)

This November, we will start a kind of society called The Seika. 'Seika 青花 (blue flower) ' is a term used for blue-and-white ceramics and is another name for dewdrops. In this society, we plan to do two in particular.

One is the publication of Kogei Seika, three issues per year. The articles are mainly on antiques, crafts, and architecture. I intend to make them worth appreciating more than practical or introductory.

The second is events such as tea and flower ceremonies and tea talks. During my work as an editor, I feel joy in being in direct contact with the artists' words and knowledge of art historians while looking at the beautiful objects. We are planning to give such opportunities regularly and openly.

Bookmaking itself is a highly sophisticated craft which involves manual labour. But unfortunately, books and crafts are being swept away by the wave of the modern speeded-up economy. We want to leave the competition and find the right place for books and crafts. What we want to restore is touch and time. In other words, the substance of life.

The following five people showed sympathy with the purpose and shared their stories. There are already others to follow. However, we can only run The Seika with your support. With those who agree with our aim, we want to create a better future for art, crafts and books.
